Chicago, September 4, 2007 - The Asian American Institute (AAI) condemns the recent senseless killing of Du Doan and will monitor the criminal investigation of his death. This past Saturday, Doan was pushed into Lake Michigan while fishing at Montrose Harbor, after an encounter with several individuals, and he eventually drowned. Three individuals who identify as skinheads have since turned themselves in to the police. After the drowning death, the police passed out fliers to warn Asian fisherman about being targets of violence. Since the reports of Doan's death, one Asian fisherman reported to the police that he had been spat upon and another fisherman reported also having been pushed a month earlier into Lake Michigan.

AAI urges community members who have been harassed or assaulted while fishing or who have witnessed such events to contact the Chicago Police Department to ensure justice for Du Doan. AAI is available to assist individuals who wish to contact law enforcement or who would like to report other anti-Asian hate incidents or hate crimes.
